………. and so another year begins

Although, as I sit here on the sofa suffering from the excesses of last nights celebrations I am feeling rather nostalgic. In typical New Years Day fashion the BBC is airing The Sound of Music, my all time favourite film, and I am transported back to my wonderful Danube River Cruise in 2012 and my visit to Salzburg. Any of the ports of call on the Danube are truly wonderful but Salzburg really was special for me.

We had a fabulous day, setting off by coach early in the morning through the Austrian Lake District with its stunning scenery. Our first stop was See Am Mondsee, the most beautiful village, where the wedding scenes from the film were shot because the convent in Salzberg would not allow filming to take place inside their walls. The church is absolutely beautiful inside and out, although you only see internal shots in the film. Just down the road is a tree lined avenue where the scenes of Maria skipping along on her way to join the family early on in the film were shot.
From here we traveled  to Salzberg itself, the most beautiful city. All around there are places that you remember from the film – the gardens, the ‘do re mi steps’, the gazebo where Leisl and Rolfe sang ‘I am 16 going on 17’, and the outdoor theatre where the scenes were shot of the ‘Salzburg Festival’ from where the Von Trap family made their escape.
All in all it was the most wonderful day and this afternoons viewing brings the memories flooding back from my wonderful cruise.
