Welcome to August and what a start to the month. I have just moved apartment from Fuengirola to Benalmadena, not the best time to move in 35+ degrees heat but I am now in and trying to unpack. I am not in much this month, as with just moving I also have friends visiting for 10 days mid-August.
But, the summer season has well and truly started in Spain and at the end of June, we saw the 1st of the Feria season in Benalmadena. Feria is a 4-7 day party that each town and village holds throughout the summer months. They continue all across the coast and inland until the last one in October in San Pedro de Alcantara, which is just the other side of Puerto Banus.
The village where my mum lives in Tolox, have their main feria this month which starts on the 14th August and is on at the same time as the week-long huge Malaga Feria. Personally, I prefer the small village ferias to the big town ones as there are too many people and I am not a big fan of crowds.
Last night I went up to my mums to stay the night and at half 10 we were in the pueblo eating crepes and ice cream whilst drinking a nice cold beverage watching the kids out playing. I had gone up to pick my dogs up, as mum had kindly had them for the week whilst I moved.
Today, we had a mooch around the village before having a bit of tapa and the village of Tolox is starting to get ready for Feria. The first signs of decorations are these beautifully crocheted umbrellas that have all been handmade by a group of women in the village and they are absolutely beautiful and each one different.
When my friends are here we will be going up to stay at my mum’s for a few nights to enjoy the daytime and evening entertainment and if it is anything to go by from previous ferias, we will not be disappointed.
So if you are docking in Malaga between the 11th-18th August, take advantage of a trip into the city to experience the day feria and see how the Spanish party through summer.
