Charity begins at home!

Well what a busy weekend I had last week.

It all began on Friday night when the jockeys were at the gate ready for a fantastic race as I took bets for a charity that I have become involved with for the past year.

Morecambe and Heysham Sea Cadets is a charitable organisation that provides young people aged 10-12 (for the Junior Section) and 12-18 (for the Sea Cadets) with life skills to better prepare them for life as responsible adults, all based on a nautical military theme.

Last Friday we held a race night whereby you bet a £1 on a horse, sheep and in some instances pigs to win a race and if your animal wins than you claim a monetary prize. All in all we managed to raise over £500 which was greatly needed by the unit.

My ties come as I have two sons, Logan aged 13 and Frazer aged 10, who have been members for over a year now. They take part in activities such as canoeing, power boating plus learn life skills such as cooking. They also have the opportunity to sail as the Sea Cadets have several vessels that they can go aboard for a weeks adventure to hone their skills and also spend several weekends away at other units in the UK.

Saturday was equally as busy as I had wanted to do a McMillan Coffee Morning on the Friday at home however as I was already busy and the kids wanted to be involved we changed it to an afternoon Tea on the Saturday.

We had in total around 35 visitors to partake of tea and homemade cakes that afternoon and we raised over £200 which we decided we would donate to our local charity called CancerCare.

CancerCare is also a charity close to my heart as they provided counselling for my daughter when two Aunts died 12 months apart and she found it difficult to cope with.

It does make me wonder though without the good hearts of many people where these charities would be.
