This Summers ‘Must Have’ Cruise Read For Relaxing By The Pool

The www.CRUISE.co.uk team had a bit of a first recently. We’ve been invited on a lot of ships over the years for a variety of different reasons but this was the first time we’ve ever been to a book launch party. Best-selling author Chrissie Manby was on-board the Royal Princess,in Southampton to launch her latest novel, A Proper Family Adventure, which she researched last November on-board the Regal Princess, sister ship to the Royal Princess.   A Proper Family Adventure is Chrissie’s 29th novel, and the third in a series about the Benson family – a follow-up to A Proper Family Holiday and A Proper Family Christmas.   The book is set upon the fictional cruise ship the European Countess but readers should find it very familiar as many aspects, like Movies Under the Stars and the iconic Sea Walk are based upon the Regal Princess. Chrissie commented at the launch to say: “From the sheer scale and opulence of the ship to the delicious food and the spectacular entertainments, I found enough inspiration on board the Regal Princess for 10 novels. I can’t imagine a better adventure for my fictional family or my real one.” Whilst David Sanders, head of PR for Princess Cruises UK, added: “It’s a real coup that Regal Princess helped inspire Chrissie and we’re delighted to see so much of what people love about our...

Casual Cruising: No Tux Required!

Cruising in the 21st century just keeps on getting better, with more and more innovation on-board than you can shake a stick at! Super hi-tech gadgets, Wi-Fi speeds that match those on land and quicker embarkation are just three of the features that cruisers on Royal Caribbean’s latest megaships can look forward to but sometimes it’s the simplest of things that can make a passenger smile and for those of us who like informality, casual cruises are that simple thing! Casual cruises may be very different to what old-school cruising veterans may be used to or what firt time cruisers imagine cruising to be but for those who prefer not to cram their case with tuxedos, diamonds (or cubic zirconias – ssssh, we won’t tell), skyscraper heels and sequinned pashminas, the option for a casual break sailing on the oceans is like a refreshing sea breeze. Whilst some formal cruise lines still exist, where elegance and formality are key and dressing up to the nines is both required and relished (*cough* Cunard *cough*), it does seem that the tide is turning. More and more cruise lines are opting for the more laidback approach, where people can feel comfortable in a posh frock or tux or dressed down in a pair of chinos or a sundress…where guests can relax with their kids and not worry about people complaining about the...

‘The Queen’ vs The Queen

The big news this week has  to be the fact that P&O have announced H.M The Queen will be naming  their newest ship Britannia. This wont be the first time the Queen has christened a cruise ship; she named both the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Elizabeth for Cunard but this will be the first time she’s named a P&O ship since the Oriana in 1995. Asking Royalty to name your cruise ship is a time honoured tradition dating back centuries but not all Cruise Lines seem to be as proficient at it as others.  Take Royal Caribbean for instance. Not being able to get any real royalty they had to ask Princess Fiona (from Shrek!) to name Allure of the Seas back in 2010. It has to have annoyed P&O that they haven’t had any ‘real’ royalty since ’95 though. Whilst P&O haven’t had to resort to fictional characters to name their ships  it’s clear that ‘losing’ the Queen to Cunard must have hurt. So much so in fact than in 2008 P&O had Helen Mirren, flush from her Oscar winning role in The Queen , name the Ventura. Now we’re not saying there’s anything wrong with Helen Mirren; we love Helen Mirren in fact! Winning an Oscar for playing a Queen is a poor substitute for a real Queen though. What do you think:    ...
