Cruisers Are Outraged As Gratuities Are On The Rise Again

It has just been confirmed that Holland America Line have increased their gratuity amounts.

HAL guests will see the increase from May 1st 2017 and the amount will rise 8%, from $12.50 to $13.50 a day. The recommended rate for suite guests will rise from $13.50 to $15 (an 11% increase).

The cruise line last increased their gratuities in December 2015. The gratuity is automatically added to a passenger’s account but can be altered by visiting guest services.

Our specialist cruise community have been sharing their thoughts on the news, click here to explore the uproar…

toshtosh had their say on the matter: ‘It looks as if we will be priced out of cruising sooner rather than later. At least with Ryanair pricing you only pay for what you want! The world of discretionary tipping seems long gone…’

Mauden counteracted: ‘When we first started cruising there were 4 envelopes for you in your cabin labelled Waiter, Assistant Waiter, Head Waiter and Cabin Steward, with advise on how to tip.

We have from then on always paid our tips and after paying all tips on a 24-night Cunard cruise and then hearing that somebody else removed them, I just don’t know how people do it!’

We interviewed a former Captain of Cunard recently and he expressed his personal opinion on cruise ship gratuities himself, take a look below…

But what are your thoughts on the news that Holland America are raising their gratuities? Do you agree that the tipping prices onboard should be increased only if the standard of service is increased? Do you think gratuities will continuously increase so long as cruising stays popular? Have your say…
