After the recent resurgence of Gin, we have seen a new breed of independent craft gin producers, with a real passion for the classic British drink. Once being nicknamed ‘mothers ruin’ Gin has made a major comeback in recent years as many more flavours have been developed to appeal to the younger generation. No longer being the basic G&T.
And this has not gone unnoticed by Fred. Olsen Cruise Line who, in 2020 will be launching their very own Gin Masterclass. This immersive onboard enrichment programme will be giving passengers the opportunity to create their very own bespoke Gin.
This experience will be premiering on the Fred. Olsen’s flagship, Balmoral, during its 70-night ‘South American Exploration’ cruise. The experience will be lead by expert gin-makers, Nigel and Debbie Wright.
Upon his retirement, Nigel Wright along with his supportive wife Debbie, have taken an interest in this new wave of Gin culture in Britain. After talking with the new generation of Gin producers and doing some solo research, Nigel applied for and was granted, the necessary licences for producing Gins at home, in the summer of 2018.
Partnering with Fred. Olsen Cruise Line, Nigel and Debbie will be leading and developing the Gin experience onboard Balmoral. Along with Gin tasting, passengers will have the chance to make up to six unique gins per session, using Fred. Olsen’s new state-of-the-art copper distilling equipment.
There will be over 50 different botanicals for guests to choose from to create their own Gin. These botanicals have been specially-selected to marry and highlight that natural flavours of Gin. All these additional flavours have been hand-selected and researched by Debbie.
Thomas Rennesland, Hotel Operations Director of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said:
“We are delighted that Nigel and Debbie Wright will be sharing their knowledge and expertise with our guests and giving them the opportunity to develop their own gin. This is a unique experience, which teaches the whole of the gin-making process, from picking the botanicals through to distillation, and we are very excited at the prospect of our guests enjoying this fantastic class.”
Gin expert Nigel Wright said:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Fred. Olsen guests to learn what goes into making a gin and to be able to create their own bespoke bottle, tailored specifically to their individual tastes and preferences.
“The Masterclasses will offer, not just practical experience, but also an educational one. Guests will be exposed to a wide range of botanicals, and will learn what they like and do not like, from which they can develop their own recipe to reflect their personal taste, and get to take it home with them as a treasured memento of their Fred. Olsen holiday.”
This unique experience will last 2 hours in total and will cost £25 per person.
